Best uses for 16:9
The 16:9 ratio is the modern default for landscape video. Most TV screens, YouTube players, video calls and laptop displays are built around this shape. Because the ratio is so widely supported, it is usually the safest first choice for horizontal content unless the destination explicitly asks for a vertical or square format.
A common mistake is treating 1920×1080 as the ratio itself. It is not: 1920×1080 is a resolution, and 16:9 is the simplified shape. You can export a 16:9 file at 1280×720, 1920×1080, 2560×1440 or 3840×2160 depending on the quality you need.
The numbers stay predictable at any size. For a 1600px-wide blog header, 16:9 gives 900px high. For a 2560px-wide presentation or monitor screenshot, 16:9 gives 1440px high. For a 3840px-wide 4K export, the matching height is 2160px. These sizes match real workflows, so you can type your own width above and read off the exact height.
Just as important is knowing when not to use 16:9. It is not ideal for TikTok, Reels, Stories or most vertical mobile placements, because those platforms reward 9:16. It is also not always ideal for Instagram feed posts, where 4:5 can take more screen space.
